"A fascinating and exciting blend of misdirection, topsy-turvy, and violence." -Reed Farrel Coleman "A dark and different serial killer novel that will haunt the reader long after the book is closed." -John Lutz "Los Angeles has seldom seen such grisly fun. It's James Ellroy meets Alfred Hitchcock on the psychotic side of the street." -Paul Levine "One of the most compelling, thrilling, and truth be told, at times look-away-from-page-frightening serial killer novels I've read in a long, long time." -Vincent Zandri Introducing L.A. investigator Morris Brick, a former homicide cop on the trail of a murderous psychopath who gives a terrifying new meaning to the word DERANGED . . . They call him the Skull Cracker Killer. He drugs his victims. Breaks open their skulls with a hammer and chisel. The rest is inhuman. Five years ago he terrorized New York City, claiming twelve victims before the killing stopped. Now he's racking up victims on a fresh hunting ground. Where former LAPD homicide detective Morris Brick is working as a consultant on a serial-killer film. Where a desperate mayor pleads with Brick to take on the case. And where the only way he can stop the next wave of murders is by outsmarting a madman-before he strikes again, this time much too close to home . . .

Morris Brick is a retired cop working as a movie consultant....but you know that from the previous reviews. Dave Zeltserman, writing as Jacob Stone in this series, is no newbie to the crime thriller/procedural/hard-boiled/horror genres, and it shows. He really knows his way around a story, and this one is nicely twisty and turny. There's a BIG twist midway through, that caught me completely by surprise. Well done! Aside from the plotting, the writing is lovely, clear and descriptive, although at times you might wish it were less so! Got some yucky stuff goin' on in here, but that's the way it should be. And as a previous reviewer mentioned, the surprise star of the story is Brick's bull terrier, Parker. He's adorable! I really enjoyed this book, and can't wait for the next one!Product details

Deranged Jacob Stone 9781516101832 Books Reviews
Morris Brick is a great detective. I really like this character and would recommend this book to anyone who is into detective books. I look forward to the next book in the series and and will read them as quickly as he can write them.
Very entertaining! Did not see the end coming. Hard to put down just because I wanted to find out if the killer was caught.
There was some serious action and I hadn't figured it out yet when halfway through, the culprit was revealed. I had not suspected whodonit. At first I didn't like the way it was revealed, and then I got hooked all over again. VERY GOOD BOOK!
This was a fast paced page turner of the crime noire genre. I'm looking forward to reading a second book in this series and seeing what new challenges face Detective Morris Brick. I think he has depths yet to be revealed.
I just finished this book and I have to say it was a little harrowing. Jacob has written a very SCARY bad guy and woman. I kept having to put it down for a few hours. Mr. Stone is an author I discovered from the .99 price on bookbub. I would like to read more of his work but it will be a while. It will also depend on if any more of his work shows up in the .99 cent bin on bookbub since I'm retired and live on a small income.
His hero, Morris Brick is also very well written and fleshed out with supporting characters with a charming pet and loving wife. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read and being frightened. I think what scared me the most was not what was done to the victims, tho that was terrifying, but how easy it was for the victims to be taken. Made me want to live more defensively.
I like the Morris Brick character. I like his wife, Natalie. His "co-stars" are less well defined, and I didn't get to know them as anything but very minor characters. I am a big fan of the police detective novel and mysteries, but this was much too dark for me. The killers were probably the most disgusting and perverse I have encountered, and they didn't suffer for having committed all their horrendous killings. I began reading the next Morris Brick book, "Crazed" and after a few pages, knowing that one if the hideous killers from "Deranged" is back in action, I closed it and will not read any more of the Morris Brick books.
The Skull Cracker Killer started out in New York City but there haven't been any new cases for five years...until now. All of the sudden the deadly killer seems to be back but now in the L.A. area. Or is he? Could it be a copycat?
The Mayor's office calls in Morris Brick, a retired homicide detective that specialized in capturing serial killers. He now runs an investigation company and the City of L.A. wants his expertise to help stop these killings.
This is a good investigative mystery with an unexpected twist (which I always like). It is gruesome in spots so be forewarned.
I read this first book in the Morris Brick series because I have the Advanced Reading Copy of the second book CRAZED ready and waiting and I'm glad I did read it to get more background on Brick. I especially liked Brick's dog, a bull terrier named Parker.
